The Story:

For the last 15 years or so every spring Video HeadQuarters has given away hundreds upon hundreds of free VHQ Kid’s T-shirts. It’s a great promotion, but an expensive one. So when I came across a printer that could print T-shirts, it got my attention. We could save a bundle printing our own kids’ T-shirts. We could make movie themed shirts & even print custom items.

As I listened to the sales rep’s pitch he talked about renting a retail space, hiring staff, generating traffic and all the expenses involved in opening a custom T-shirt shop. ‘Wait a minute’ I thought to myself, ‘we already have a prime retail space, a great staff and solid traffic. All we have to do is put the printer where our customers can see it, and between our kids’ T-shirts and prints we can do for customers, we can probably print enough to pay for the equipment.’

So, here it is, and if I’m wrong, well you’ll probably see it on Ebay in a few months.

What it is:

Basically it’s a big inkjet printer specially designed to print on fabric using new water based (totally safe) inks. It will print on T-shirts, sweat shirts, golf shirts, aprons, towels, even blue jeans, any cotton or cotton blend fabric.

What it can do:

• It can print an area 14” wide by 16” tall at 600 dot per inch (dpi). That’s high resolution.
• It can print on the front, back, sleeve, pocket….
• Color: Because it doesn’t need ‘plates’ like screen printing, it can print in full color at the same cost as a single color. You can actually print photos.
• Because it needs no setup material (plates), it can print a single item cost effectively

What it can’t do:

• You can’t print on black paper with your home inkjet printer and we can’t print on black shirts. For a print to show up the ink has to be darker than the fabric. The lighter the fabric color the better.
• We can’t print on waterproof materials because they won’t absorb the water based inks.

Can a shirt be washed?

Absolutely. You can wash the garments as often as you like without losing the print.
